Wikitravel

The Wikitravel project was started in July 2003 by Evan Prodromou and Michele Ann Jenkins, inspired in part by Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Wikitravel aims to create a free, and reliable world-wide travel guide. So far, Wikitravel has 13,649 destination guides and other articles written by Wikitravellers from around the globe. Wikitravel enables travelers to get easy access to travel information; their copyleft license means that anyone can contribute their own or other people's text and images, as long as the work is their own or available under a compatible license.

Wikitravel is a multilingual project available in 13 different languages. Wikitravel uses a tool called Wiki, which lets any Internet reader create, update, edit, and illustrate any article on the website. Wikitravel only says that editors should express their personal opinions in a " fair" manner. Wikitravel has talk pages for each article, but these are used to develop the article itself, and not as a forum to discuss travel experiences. Wikitravel also does not encourage blatant advertising on the site.

Wikitravel has now been acquired by Internet Brands, a company based in El Segundo, California which operates online media and e-commerce sites. The same company also operates World66, a travel guide that also uses Wiki software. Both Wikitravel and World66 are built with the spirit of sharing knowledge that makes travel so enjoyable.
