AVOIDING THEFT WHEN TRAVELING

Make sure to keep a low profile. Thieves love to catch their prey when confused among crowds and tourist traps. If staying in a hotel, do not leave your camera out where it can be easily seen by hotel workers. Eliminate the temptation when you can. Keep the camera on you or packed away in a suitcase. Beautiful luggage also lures thieves. They do judge the book by its cover. Thieves tend to choose luxurious suitcases first before the beat up one, like mine that has a few small holes. Statistics say that things tend to get stolen less in your room than when out of the room with you in a day bag on busy streets. Usually hotels are relatively safe from thieves and can offer good advice on personal safety.

When traveling on a train, be alert at stops. This is the time when thieves can grab your bag and dash off the train. When sleeping anywhere but in your hotel, fasten your pack or suitcase to yourself and the seat. Thieves don’t normally ask for permission and don’t want to wake you up. Also the more difficult you make it is for them to steal the better. Smaller things like having to untie the strap of your pack can discourage most thieves from stealing. Women should not sleep along, anywhere. When you sleep, make sure there are people around. It’s safer to share a crowded compartment than to sleep along. Moreover, when checking in bags, keep the claim ticket or key in your money belt.
