TRAVEL SMART AND AVOID THIEVES
Big-city subway turnstiles are popular place to rob the unsuspecting tourist. Many thieves work as a team and create a busy crowded scene to distract tourists from paying attention to their belongings. Busy flea markets and city buses and subways are thieves’ hunting grounds. With many people all around you, one person brushing against you may not seem strange. Thieves can use the unaware moment to grab your valuable things. So be on guard. A popular tactic is when one thief blocks the entry way to a bus or subway on purpose and causes the person behind to inevitably bump into you. Lock your zippers and keep your bags closed when in crowded areas. Also avoid using a “fanny” pack as a money belt. It’s just too obvious and too tempting for thieves to strip them off of you.
Another common target for thieves is tourists’ cars. As a rule of thumb, don’t leave anything valuable that can be easily seen in your parked car, any time of day. It only takes them a few second to brake a window and grab your valuable, so don’t risk it. Put away your bright colored purse or valuable items in the trunk or take them with you. Better yet, stick to the low profile rule and use drab colored items and clothing when possible. Another good tip is to leave your glove compartment open, so thieves can see without breaking in. Make sure to park your car in a safe area. Your hotel receptionist should be able to advise safe areas and any precautions necessary. |
