TRAVELING IN EUROPE
Europe is a relatively safe place to walk around at night compared to America. Violent crime isn’t so prevalent like other places around the world. But it’s not crime-free. Pick-pocketing and purse-snatching still happen quite often. Thieves often target Americans. They assume that Americans are loaded with valuable stuff, even though that may not be true for some of us. They also take advantage of the fact the American tourists are vulnerable in a foreign environment. Americans tend to stick out like sore thumbs. The way we dress, walk, and talk give it away quite easily. A seasoned traveler once shared a story of a woman whose purse was stolen, and inside her purse was where she kept her money belt!
If you aren’t watchful, don’t be surprised if some or more of your belongings are stolen while walking on busy streets or using public transportation. It is quite common for tourists to report incidents of pick-pocketing and stolen cars. But very rarely do we hear about violent crimes like being gunned down or shot point blank. Regardless, be wise and use a lot of common sense that may not be so common these days. Remember most crimes are avoidable, so be on guard and don’t forget to relax and have fun. Learn to outsmart the thieves. Leave your precious valuables at home or in safe and wear your money belt when on the road. Don’t forget there are honest locals out there who are on your side.
