Thailand And Buddhim

The history of Thailand begins with the rise of the Sukothai Kinddom in the thirteen century. Even since the beginning of Thailand, Buddhism has strong influence in Thailand. Under devout kings of Ayudhya, Buddhism was prosperous.  By 1750, Thailand has accumulated great quantities of sacred writing about Buddhism.

Many of Thai traditions and cultures come from Buddhism. The majority of Thais (95%) are Buddhists. The rest of Thais are Muslims in the south and hill tribe (Karen ) . The traditional Thai greeting is putting hands together to pray for Buddha. The greeting is called, “wai”.

Thailand has never been conquered by the colonial power. Therefore, it was never subjected to assaults by Christian missionaries. In 19 th century, King Mongkut was a former monk himself. He conducted a campaign to reform the monkhood. His movement still continues to the present.
