A LOOK AT THE NEW BANGKOK

Bangkok has approximately 12 million people. The city is constantly hot and humid and the pollution is quite bad. Dark and noxious smog from public buses often fills the city with clouds of fumes. Traffic police and street sweepers often wear mask to filter the air while working on the streets. While some of the big-city problems persist, others have improved. The canals in and around the city are being cleaned, and more trees are being planted and a number of green areas have been designated.

The city has also experienced the advancement of western technology when it comes to transportation. In 1999, the Sky train opened. Although the cost is significantly more expensive than public buses, it saves time and a lot of headache since it runs on schedule and does not depend on the ever increasing gridlock underneath. The Sky train runs through the heart of Bangkok and the commercial and shopping districts.
Bangkok is commonly called by Thais as Krung Thep, which means “City of Angels.” The full name of the city is so long that a singer once composed the entire song from its actual name.

Bangkok is different from any another city in Thailand. One fifth of the population lives here. There is a common saying by critics that in Thailand people respect the Buddha, but in Bangkok, they worship the Baht. The city can easily be classified as first world. Materialism is a religion to many people in Bangkok. It is the center of politics, fashion, entertainment and much more. While the rest of the country strives to preserve the traditions, Bangkok seems to abandon them and boldly embrace western culture.
